Mission Sunday ‘08

Over the last few weeks the children at St Alban’s have been getting themselves ready for our Parish Mission Day, including making bookmarks and decorating crosses. On the day (31 August) the children helped with a coin trail and sold the items they had made. In total they raised more than $500 towards the project we support in Fiji!

Take this bread, drink this wine

Over the last four weeks a group of children have been meeting with Damon to talk about what it means to belong to God’s Family and to share in the celebrations of the church. The course concluded with a service of thanksgiving where the young people were presented with a certificate and invited to help Damon with the preparations for the Eucharist. The photos show Matthias, Elspeth, Matthew and Tobin at the altar (Ralph is hidden behind one of the Liturgical Assistants).

Belmont Pilgrimage

Over 100 Anglicans from the Hutt Valley walked the Hutt River trail on Saturday 14 June to mark the 150th anniversary of the Diocese of Wellington. The walk began at the memorial cross on Petone beach and ended at St John’s Church in Trentham (23kms!). Along the way we passed by golf courses and city streets, markets and sports grounds, and the oldest church in the region - Christ Church Taita.

In the beginning…

Creation was a recent theme at the Sunday Clubs. The young people re-created the world Pohutukawa Club style in pillows, blankets and soft toys. After the reenactment of the sixth day with the final arm full of cuddly animals safely placed in their cosy habitats there was a whole new appreciation for the seventh day!

Harvest Festival April 2008

On Sunday April 13 we celebrated Harvest Festival. Home made jams, vegetables and a variety of fruit from local gardens, a couple of red cod caught in the harbour the night before, and seedtrays planted out by our young people, filled the foyer of the church, and added to the festive atmosphere. Harvest is a time to give thanks to God for the gifts of the earth and for us to consider ways to share our bounty with others. The money raised from this year’s service will go to mission projects we support overseas.

Pancake Party 08

The Pancake Party on Shrove Tuesday has become a tradition at St Alban’s. Each year the children of the parish gather for pancakes races and other activities. This year the weather was a little inclement, but a large number of children still gathered and we were able to have the races outside. Fun was had by all!

Walk to Church Sunday

March 2 was ‘Walk to Church Sunday’. A group of twenty or more gathered at the local school and walked the 2km to church together. As part of the Sunday clubs the children made a ‘foot banner’. Over forty pairs of feet , dipped in coloured paint, walked out from the centre of the banner, a visual reminder that we are to be bearers of Christ’s light in our world. At the end of the activity the children washed one another’s feet.

Lenten Retreat Feb ‘08

On the weekend of February 22-24 a group of fifteen parishioners went on retreat to Jerusalem/Hiruharama up the Whanganui River. A four-five hour drive from Eastbourne, the last hour on unsealed road, it was an ambitious adventure, but the stunning scenery, the history of the area, and the shared experience of praying and reading the scriptures together, made the long journey well worth it. To find out more, read the report in the latest OUTLOOK magazine (a copy is available on this website).
